There is a lot of education and studying that is required to be a doctor in the United States. This is not a career path that just appears out of no where and anyone can do it. In fact, it takes years and years of studying and fellowships to become a doctor. Depending upon the area of study that you wish to pursue you could be studying anywhere from eight to 10 years.
Here is a look at the education that is required to become a doctor in the medical field.
High School. Almost every college degree is going to require that you have some type of high school diploma or GED. Some high schools even have a very serious course of study that allows students to study medical related courses and can enter medical straight out of high school but this is rare. Most students will graduate high school and head to a regular college.
College Degree. In order to enter a medical school you will need to have some type of college degree under your belt. Most medical schools will look for courses in science, biology, math and other medical related courses. It will also be important to keep a high grade point average so that entrance to the medical program will go smoothly. During your college years you will take a test known as the MCAT or Medical College Admittance Test. This will determine what medical schools will accept you or even take a look at your application.
Medical School. After graduating from college, you will need to attend a medical school. This is usually a four year course of study that can range from general studies of the medical field to specified studies of lessons for specific fields within the medical community.
Residency. While a residency isn’t about studying it does require that you are learning and picking things up. These can last from two to four years depending on the field of study.
