Studying Science for Society

You might think that when you study the sciences, you are only going to benefit yourself. And if you absolutely hate to study the sciences, you might think that the only people who benefit from this practice are the more sadistic teaches who coerce students such as yourself into this torment and smile all the way through the process. But whether you realize it (or believe it) or not, there is actually a reason why studying the sciences is great for society as a whole. And this reason basically consists of allowing ordinary people to be ruled, not by ridiculous superstitions and unexplainable fears, but by reason and at least some degree of understanding of the world around them. When the people understand the world better, better things tend to happen.

Think about it. In a society in which the people do not know much about the sciences, every problem can easily be chalked up to all kinds of supernatural, mystical or otherwise just ridiculous gibberish. Every time a self confident person produces a half reasonable explanation for something, if there is no evidence or knowledge to the contrary, people just tend to believe it. This is why so many people believed in witches hundreds of years ago- some children got sick and had seizures, and in their delirium (or in their desire for malice), they blamed people who ended up paying the ultimate price for a horrible misunderstanding.

The sciences are about more than just punishing ourselves with facts, math problems and learning about things that may seem to have no bearing on our normal lives. In effect, science is all about shedding light on the subjects which would otherwise be cast in darkness. When the people study the sciences, at least to a basic extent, they are far less willing to fall for any kind of nonsense that someone in a position of authority may throw their way. This helps the entire world.
