People often say that becoming a teacher is one of the greatest things that a person can do. After all, teachers are the key to our future. They teach, guide and influence the youth of the world in many ways. However, there is one specific type of teacher that really goes above and beyond the call of duty. Special education teachers are very influential people who have the care and patients to instruct those with special needs. Due to the patience and extensive knowledge that is involved with being a special education teacher there is a lot more than just going to college and getting a degree.
Here is a look at the steps that are involved with becoming a special education teacher.
Obtain a BA Degree in Teaching. The first step to obtaining a career in teaching special education is to receive a degree in teaching. This can be obtained from any regular four year college or university. Many times these colleges will have classes that cater to special needs so that all the studies that you do will focus on that. However, there will be some basic classes that all teacher are required to take.
Teacher-Training Program. A specific teacher-training program will be required. This is where those that obtain a degree in teaching will shadow other teachers for experience. If you are looking to work with special needs children it is a good idea to make sure that the teacher-training program is special needs specific.
Obtain a Master’s in Special Education. Some states require that all teachers that are in the special education field hold a master’s degree in special education. This will require that you take an extra year’s worth of college courses and complete a master’s thesis.
Obtain a Teacher’s Certificate. All states require that the teacher obtain a teaching certificate in the state that they wish to teach in. This will require proof that you graduated and some paperwork.
